Guide figures only. Chandler's Ford is mostly residential, so we plan levels and finish times around the neighbours from the start rather than turning things down halfway through the evening.

Village rooms and back gardens

We cover Chandler's Ford, Hiltingbury, Fryern Hill and Valley Park, along with Otterbourne, Hursley and North Baddesley just up the road.

Two buildings account for most of what we do here. The Hilt, the community centre at Hiltingbury, has a large hall with a stage that takes around two hundred people, plus smaller rooms and a fitted kitchen. It's a proper venue and a pleasure to rig. The Fryern Pavilion has several rooms of quite different sizes and free parking on site, which makes load-in about as easy as it gets. Between them they host most of the birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and community events in the area.

The rest of what we do in Chandler's Ford happens in back gardens. Marquee parties here come with their own set of problems that a hotel doesn't have: a driveway too tight for a long van, no socket within fifty metres of the tent, and neighbours on three sides who didn't get an invitation. None of it's difficult, but all of it's easier if somebody asks the questions a fortnight beforehand instead of on the day.

That's the approach here. Smaller, better-placed systems rather than the biggest rig we own. Speakers angled into the space so the sound goes where the people are. And a finish time you have set, which we hold to.

Rooms and spaces we work in

  • The Hilt, Hiltingbury Community Centre, large hall with a stage, plus smaller rooms
  • Fryern Pavilion, several room sizes with parking on site
  • Church halls for services, christenings and socials
  • Garden marquees and gazebos, including cable runs from the house
  • Scout and guide huts and other small community buildings
  • Home parties where the system has to fit a lounge rather than a hall

The local questions

We're having it in the garden. Is that a problem?

Not at all, but a few things change. Sound behaves differently outdoors, with nothing to reflect off, so it needs more careful placement rather than more volume. We'll want to know where the power is coming from, whether there's cover if it rains, and how close the nearest neighbours are. Given all three we can usually make a garden sound better than the marquee hire company expects.

Which Chandler's Ford halls do you know?

The Hilt at Hiltingbury Community Centre and the Fryern Pavilion come up most often. The Hilt has a large hall with a proper stage and takes a couple of hundred people, which is a genuinely good room to put a system into. The Fryern Pavilion has several rooms of different sizes and parking on site, so load-in is easy. Either way, tell us which room you have booked rather than just the building, because the rooms differ a lot.

Will the neighbours complain?

They're closer here than at a town centre venue, so it's a fair question. We aim the speakers into the space rather than across the fence, keep the subwoofer off the boundary, and set a sensible level rather than the loudest one the rig will do. If you tell us the time you have agreed to finish, we'll build the evening to land on it.
